How Micro-Plastics are Erasing our Eco-Systems

So how did we get here? A devastating amount of plastic materials are produced by humans on a yearly basis. Over 16 billion tons of which are discarded into our water bodies. They then end up not only as pollution, but as toxic substances in our ocean’s vital food chain. This leads to the poisoning of our all maurine life.

In some cases, micro-plastics are seen as food and this has led to the death of a growing number of aquatic animals. Research has also shown that not all plastic products after decomposing are visible. while only some can be seen, others might appear to be invisible by the naked eye.

Plastic Particles are Painful to Pinpoint

This is true since their origin is almost always left unknown. As mentioned, most plastics do not completely decompose and lie dormant within the size of 5 millimeters. While only a slight percentage might be larger, this makes the whole identification process much harder.

Individuals and research institutes have decided to engage in discovering the most common plastics found in the earth’s oceans. The research has proven that plastics account for 60 percent of all debris found in the oceanic regions. The various plastics have various designs, structures, and densities. This makes the whole identification process even more difficult. Some plastic materials may be in the form of polyethylene while others polypropylenes and even more less common makeups.

Materials Making Maurine Environments Exceedingly Ill

The various types of plastic materials have different densities. They also absorb different kinds of contaminants and toxic substances that cause significant harm to the health of aquatic organisms when they’re ingested. Hence, the need to know the most dominant type of plastic materials to have the greatest effects on marine ecosystems. With this same knowledge, we will be able to combat effectively these challenges.

The gas chromatography-mass spectrometry ( Whew! Big word. ) is also a very reliable method of identification of dominant plastic materials. With the GCMS, several materials will be identified by their parts. Using this method, a list of dominant plastic materials can easily be identified, and will help to reduce the level of marine pollution around the globe.

This method is virtually a new style of identification, but has proven to be very effective over the period it’s been in place. It not only tells the researchers what’s in our oceans, but also gives a hint about what should be done to reduce these contaminants.

Revealing New Research to the Rescue

The results of new research has show that 236,000 metric tons of plastic materials are floating on the surface of the ocean. These plastic materials can be recycled and converted into usable forms. If we can all get behind this, it will be a new positive direction for the earth’s population as a whole. Another fact about the ingestion of micro-plastics is that they’re responsible for the intestinal blockage and nutritional deficiency marine animals and even the birds as part of the food chain.

When the plastics are ingested by water organisms, they accumulate and eventually cause intestinal blockages. When micro-plastics identification is performed using the most right techniques, it will lead us to better management of the sea health life cycles. As much research has been performed on the makeup of plastics, only little discovery has seen the light of day. More research will be done in the years to come to fight the effects of plastics pollution.
